1. Precision population health. Quality of care for patient populations can be enhanced by embracing health information technology paired with tailored interventions. Dr. Somsouk's research program is funded by CDC, in partnership with the SF Department of Public Health, to examine how patient panel management can be employed to improve the continuum of colorectal cancer screening as a model condition. Randomized designs test health interventions and health economic approaches quantify the value of efficacious activities.
2. Intestinal mucosal biology. The gastrointestinal tract is a major site of disease pathogenesis. One major focus is HIV, quantifying the HIV reservoir and host control. Another focus is targeted interventions to modulate the microbiota. Approaches employed: organoid models, isolation of epithelial cells, lymphocytes, microbiota, and interventional trials such as fecal transplant.
